Dial-up Internet access uses the facilities of the public switched telephone network(PSTN) to establish a dialed connection through telephone lines. Dial-up requires no infrastructure other than the telephone network. Dial-up remains useful and it is often the only choice available for rural or remote areas, where broadband installations are not prevalent due to low population density and high infrastructure cost.
Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a set of communications standards for simultaneous digital transmission of voice, video, data, and other network services over the traditional circuits of the PSTN.
